ABOUT
EthicalGuard Competition
This competition explores ethical manufacturing by designing tools to ensure the ethics of the product for digital manufacturing. Our goal is to promote the ethical use of AI, particularly in manufacturing, and support initiatives like a no-gun policy on university campuses across the U.S.
The competition includes two tracks: Non-technical and Technical.
Eligibility: Open to all registered undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. students from UB and UGA.

Dr. Wenyao Xu
Professor and Associate Department Chair
Dr. Xu is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Department in the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, where he founds and directs the ESC (Embedded Sensing and Computing) Group. He has published over 200 technical papers, co-authored 2 books and is a named inventor on many international and U.S. patents. He received the Ph.D. degree from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He received both M.S. degree and B.S. degree from Zhejiang University (both with honor), China.
Dr. Chi Zhou
Associate Professor, Director of Graduate Studies
Dr. Zhou is an associate professor in Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University at Buffalo (UB). He received his doctorate in industrial and systems engineering from the University of Southern California in 2012 and his master’s degree in computer science from USC in 2010. Prior to joining UB in July 2013, Dr. Zhou was a senior research and development engineer at EnvisionTec Inc. He participated in various R&D projects related to the development of featured 3D printing machines. Dr. Zhou’s current research interests are in the areas of computer-aided design and manufacturing. His research has been published in high-quality venues.
Dr. Hongyue Sun
Associate Professor
Dr. Hongyue Sun is an associate professor in Mechanical Engineering, College of Engineering, University of Georgia. Prior to joining University of Georgia, he was an assistant professor in Industry Engineering, University at Buffalo. He has a multidisciplinary background with a B.E. in mechanical engineering, M.S. in statistics, and Ph.D. in industrial engineering, respectively. Dr. Hongyue Sun’s research interests are data science for advanced manufacturing, occupational safety, and healthcare systems. His research has been broadly supported by NSF, NIOSH, Navy, MxD, etc. His research has been recognized by several best paper awards from INFORMS and IISE.
